CHRONICLE GOES HERE >>>>
Watch:
Chun, Wendy Hui Kyong. “Segregation: The Stuff Social Media is Made Of”, Lecture Penn State University, 2018
✸ on Rolando Vázquez' INTERVIEW: ✸
on decolonial listening, humbling of modernity, justice + healing (of f.e. displacement), new materialism (and it's dominant position), digital information overload (and enclosures by alghorithms)
- overlapping's w/ Ahmed's and Wekker's txt's, and Chun's talk
- similar practices (of building bridges between different cultures/peoples):
1. contra points (YT) 2. interviews (f.e. Fallaci's)
3. memorial services in public spaces
- on new materialism's erasing of the past:
~ makes it impossible to reflect on patterns & what went wrong
~ no traces of the past in the present
~ possible/it's a practice to fill up these gaps with fiction (f.e. afrofuturism)
~ calendar/forms of linear time are Western, some are reclaiming that back
~ monuments/statues/obelyx ("boner slicing" fe haha) come to mind when thinking about the question "how do you simultaneously move on/heal/attempt justice, while still recognizing, but not "dwelling on" the past, etc (fine lines, complex)
-> Be open why and where you are using it for
-> Ask permission for every publishing step, for every context you'll place them or their story in !!!
-> Careful to not f.e. water down/change (the content/context of) what they've shared
COUNTERPOINT: Be aware/a bit suspicious/ask the right (&enough) questions when being interviewed/photographed/etc - especially with commercial companies
- holidays/national remembrance days: how to make these accessible to everyone?
- one can create things to remember what isn't known (-Lila)
- What does one choose to remember/document/listen to/deconstruct?
How does one interview relevant sources, while being careful about "reactivating" trauma/pain/etc?
✸ on Wendy Hui Kyong Chun's LECTURE: ✸
on immaterial digital materiality (of f.e. the cloud), colonized e-topias, discriminating cyber ad's, alghoritms vs individual bias and systematic bias, homophily, and data harvest
- buying digital storage is a quite new concept
- utopias, and the fight & FLIGHT response, are a very priviliged concept
- FB sign up requires ID nowadays
- also some 18+ google/YT services now (in NL)
- this^ + subscription services, to get rid of ad's, etc -> build on people's dependance on their services
~ HINT, gemeente (less information in English than Dutch)
~ toeslagen affaire of 2020 (systematic alghoritmic profiling [= goverment trying to shift the blame from themselves] and wrongfully accusing ppl of scamming)
~ leefbaarometer.nl (discrimination on f.e. immigrational backgrounds)
~ BSR model: https://marketresponse.nl/producten-diensten/bsr-leefstijlen/ (similar to homophily and it's connection to segregation neighborhoods as "proof")
~ Amst: alghoritms that filter by zipcode on which area's are dangerous (fe in Beilmer, Amst, people are "more likely to be criminals") - similar to Chicago Hitlist scenario
~ "random" airport check's (profiling on appearance and last names etc)
~ Russian "random" checks, where they can plant sth suspicious corrupt shit on you
~ "random" police checks in USA can be dangerous bc of lack of gun control, bc lack of adequate police training
~ google's/FB algh "guesses" on your personality
~ political parties using completely different, even contradicting, slogan's and messages for different groups people (f.e. FDP in Germany this Sept 21)
~ twitter thumbails would only show the white people, and cut out POC from it
~ Tay ("Twitter taught Microsoft's AI chatbot to be a racist asshole")
~ 70% of all tweets are tweeted from 10% of all accounts, and many bots
~ most % of covid tweets were from bots
~ language barriers in censored FB hashtags and content (fb MARTYR being translated as TERRORIST and censored/deleted)
examples of irl echo chambers:
- substac platform -> for independant publication's
- historical reasons for some communities for being suspicious of the covid vaccine, f.e. is certain 3rd world communities, have been used for and infected, in order for long term testing fe siphilis, aids. anticonception pills
- didactive reasoning: w/ fixed categories, a probability given, based on patterns
- inductive reasoning: w/ correct premises
- abductive reasoning: allows for uncertainty, based on empirical evidence, used for computers now (AI)
